How to add proximity voice chat to a The Isle server

The Isle has no voice chat of its own. Here is how to add positional voice, so players hear the dinosaurs around them, and what it costs.

To add proximity voice to The Isle, the server needs a voice service that knows where each player is, and every player needs a client that connects to it. Primal Voice does both, for free. On a Primal Hosted server it is already switched on. On a Windows dedicated server you host yourself, you get a free licence, install the server mod, and send your players the Primal Voice download.

How proximity voice works in The Isle

Positional voice needs two things the game does not provide: each player's position, read from the server, and a voice connection that sets the volume of each speaker by distance. A server-side mod supplies the positions. A desktop app on each player's PC carries the voice, signs the player in with Steam so it knows which dinosaur is theirs, and mixes the voices by how far away they are.

Option 1: a server hosted by Primal Hosted

Voice is already enabled on every Primal Hosted server, at no cost, with no player cap. There is nothing to switch on. Send your players to primalhosted.com/voice to install Primal Voice.

Option 2: a server you host yourself (Windows)

  1. Get a free licence at panel.primalhosted.com/voice/start. You receive the server mod, your key, and step-by-step setup instructions.
  2. Install the server mod on your Windows dedicated server and add your key.
  3. Send your players the Primal Voice download. Self-hosted voice supports Windows dedicated servers only for now.

What players install

  • Primal Voice for Windows 10 and 11. One installer, code-signed by Primal Hosted LLC, which updates itself.
  • Steam sign-in, on Steam's own page. Primal Voice never sees the player's Steam password.
  • Automatic connection. Launch The Isle and join a supported server; Primal Voice notices which server it is and connects by itself.
  • Push-to-talk, mute and deafen on keys that work while the game has focus, noise suppression, and an in-game overlay that shows who is talking nearby.

Players who do not install it can still play normally. The game is unchanged without it.

Tell your players before they install it

Primal Voice records what players say and turns it into text. The transcript is stored with the speaker's SteamID and in-game position, where the server's staff can read it. The audio itself is not kept. This is how staff settle disputes, and it applies all the time, not only to reported incidents. Full detail.

Other ways to get voice in The Isle

Before dedicated tools existed, communities paired Mumble with a positional-audio plugin, and some still do. That route works, but every player has to install and configure it, and the server owner maintains the plugin through game updates. Some hosts also offer voice of their own. Compare what players have to install, whether voice is free for every player, and whether it keeps working after a patch.
